Macorni had a problem.

Actually, Macorni had two problems.

He stood in the hallway rubbing his chin, thinking very hard.

On one hand, Jack acted like a vampire.
On the other hand, Jack acted like someone who owned shoes and feelings.

Macorni decided there was only one way to solve this mystery.

This made Macorni’s head hurt.

Naturally, he decided to investigate.

He tiptoed to Jack’s room and peeked inside.

Inside, Jack lay stretched out on the bed, completely still, blanket pulled up to his chest, breathing normally.

Sleeping.

Macorni gasped.

Vampires did not sleep.

They rested.
They brooded.
They stared at walls for several hours.

But they did not sleep.

Macorni backed away slowly, then turned and ran down the hall, nearly crashing into a coat rack, a pillar, a coffin, and one extremely annoyed spider.

“BEAK!” he hissed dramatically. “YOU WERE RIGHT!”

Beak looked up from polishing his boots. “About which thing?”

“He was sleeping!” Macorni whispered. “Eyes closed. Not brooding. Sleeping.”

Beak’s grin spread slowly. “Then it’s time,” he said. “We tell Leader Ben.”

Unfortunately for them, Mira had been standing behind a pillar the whole time.

She sprinted to Jack’s room and shook him violently. “WAKE UP! YOU’RE BEING TOO HUMAN!”

Jack blinked. “I was resting my eyelids.”

The door burst open.

Ben stormed in, clutching his gaming controller like it had betrayed him personally.

“WHY ARE PEOPLE DISTURBING ME DURING LEVEL TWENTY?”

Macorni pointed. “He was sleeping!”

Jack gasped loudly. “Sleeping? How dare you! I was not sleeping!”

Ben narrowed his eyes. “Then what were you doing?”

Jack hesitated. “I was… playing video games.”

Mira nodded fast. “Yes! Playing video games! With his eyes closed!”

Beak shouted, “THAT IS NOT A THING!”

Macorni waved his arms. “Vampires don’t sleep!”

Jack crossed his arms. “Vampires don’t accuse.”

Ben groaned and turned towards Beak and Macroni. “Because of you two, I lost level twenty.”

He turned and stormed out muttering angrily about unfair bosses and broken mechanics.

Jack waited until the hallway was quiet.

Then he slipped off one shoe.

THUMP.

It hit Beak.

He threw the other.

THUD.

Macorni squeaked and fainted on the spot.

No one reacted.

Mira stepped over Macorni carefully. “Should we help him?”

Jack shrugged. “He’ll wake up eventually. Or not.”

Somewhere else in the castle, a muffled voice echoed from behind a door.

“HELLO? I THINK I’M LOCKED IN THE PANTRY.”

No one answered.

The castle went on as usual.

And Jack, still human, still pretending, lay back on his bed and sighed.

🌀 What Just Happened?

  • Macorni caught Jack doing the most suspicious thing of all: sleeping.
  • Beak and Macorni tried to report him, but Ben only cared about losing level twenty.
  • Jack claimed he was “playing video games with his eyes closed.”
  • Jack threw his shoes, knocking out both accusers.
  • Someone got locked in the pantry and everyone ignored it.
