The sleepover kicked off just the way the girls had hoped, full of laughter, jokes, and enough noise to make the neighbors wonder if a zoo had opened upstairs. Hannah, true to her reputation, kept poking Kate with a rolled-up chip packet every five seconds until Kate snapped, “If you don’t stop, I’m going to tape your mouth shut with duct tape.”
“Relax,” Hannah grinned, “I’m just keeping you entertained.”
Meanwhile, Emily had managed to inhale nearly all the snacks without anyone noticing until Kate turned around. “Wait a second… where’s the popcorn?”
Emily froze mid-bite, cheeks puffed up. “Uh… sample testing?”
Kate and Hannah stared at her. Then, without warning, they both launched every pillow they could find straight at her.
“PILLOW JUSTICE!” Hannah shouted.
“AHH! Nooo!” Emily squealed, shielding herself. But soon she was laughing too, hitting them back with whatever pillow she could grab. The room turned into a battlefield of feathers and laughter until all three collapsed onto the floor, gasping for air.
When they finally caught their breath, Kate smirked. “Okay, since you’re all warmed up, I say… we tell horror stories.”
Emily sat up, her blue eyes wide. “No way. Nope. Not happening. I’m not listening to scary stuff.”
“Oh, come on, Em,” Hannah teased. “What’s the worst that could happen? Besides, I need a good scare to make up for all those burnt cookies your mom fed us last week.”
“HEY!” Emily protested. “Those were… crispy!”
“Crispy?” Kate snorted. “They could’ve broken my tooth.”
Emily pouted. “Well, excuse me for trying.”
Kate smirked, reaching over to switch off the lights. “No excuses now.”
The room plunged into darkness. The three huddled under one blanket, their faces glowing faintly from the streetlights outside.
Kate lowered her voice, making it as dramatic as possible. “There’s a floor in this building… the 14th floor. No one lives there. It’s empty. But strange things happen. Elevator doors open by themselves… the lift stops there even when no one pressed the button…”
Emily’s breathing grew louder. “Kate, stop.”
“…and when it does,” Kate whispered, “no one comes in. No one leaves. Some say… a ghost lives there.”
“Awesome!” Hannah whispered. “Ten out of ten. I’d move in tomorrow.”
“You’re insane,” Emily snapped. “Ghosts don’t pay rent!”
Suddenly, the lights flickered. Emily shrieked so loudly she nearly burst the blanket.
“It’s happening! The ghost is here!” she cried, clutching Hannah’s arm..
A split second later, they heard a laugh. Kate’s laugh.
When Emily whipped her head around, she saw Kate standing by the switch, flicking it on and off with a wicked grin.
“Kate!” Emily shouted. She grabbed the nearest blanket and hurled it at her. Then another. And another. Until Kate was buried under a pile of five heavy blankets, muffled laughter echoing from inside her cloth prison.
“Next time,” Emily huffed, “don’t mess with me.”
