By the time night settled over the Carter house, everything had finally become quiet.

Tommy was in his room, fast asleep.

At least… that’s what Lloyd had been told.

Lloyd sat alone in the living room, staring at the wall, still trying to understand the strange events of the evening.

First the news.

Then the cooking.

Then the eight-hundred-page book.

Then the math homework.

Lloyd slowly shook his head.

“This kid is not normal,” he whispered.

He grabbed a notebook from his backpack and opened it on the coffee table.

If he couldn’t understand what Tommy was, he would have to investigate.

Very carefully.

Very scientifically.

Lloyd clicked his pen and wrote at the top of the page in big letters:

Tommy Investigation List

Then he began writing his theories.

  1. Robot
  2. Time traveller
  3. Alien
  4. Secret government experiment

Lloyd leaned back and stared at the list.

“All very possible,” he muttered.

He tapped the pen against his chin.

“The truth must be discovered.”

Lloyd closed the notebook slowly.

“I will observe the subject.”

He stood up quietly and tiptoed down the hallway toward Tommy’s room.

The house was dark and silent. The only light came from a small night lamp glowing in Tommy’s room.

Lloyd carefully peeked through the doorway.

Tommy was lying in bed.

Blanket pulled up.

Eyes closed.

Breathing slowly.

Completely normal.

Lloyd narrowed his eyes.

“Too normal,” he whispered.

He stepped back into the hallway and sat down beside the wall, facing Tommy’s door.

“This is suspicious,” he said quietly. “Very suspicious.”

Lloyd crossed his arms.

“I will stay here and observe.”

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

Then fifteen.

The hallway grew quiet and warm.

Lloyd’s eyelids began to feel heavy.

He blinked slowly.

His head tilted forward slightly.

Then—

Creeeak.

Lloyd’s eyes snapped open.

The bedroom door slowly opened.

Tommy stepped out, rubbing his eyes and yawning.

Lloyd instantly jumped up and pressed himself behind the corner of the wall.

He whispered urgently to himself.

“Stealth mode. Stealth mode.”

Tommy walked past him without noticing.

Or at least… Lloyd thought he hadn’t noticed.

Tommy shuffled sleepily into the kitchen.

Lloyd carefully leaned forward to peek around the corner.

Tommy dragged a chair toward the fridge.

He climbed onto it, opened the refrigerator, and pulled out a bottle of milk.

Then he began drinking straight from the bottle.

Lloyd gasped quietly.

“Milk,” he whispered.

He quickly flipped open his notebook and scribbled something.

Aliens possibly drink milk at night.

He nodded seriously.

“Yes. That makes sense.”

Tommy lowered the bottle.

Then slowly turned around.

His eyes landed directly on Lloyd.

Lloyd froze halfway behind the wall, with one arm and half his face sticking out.

Tommy stared at him.

“You are very bad at hiding,” Tommy said calmly.

Lloyd blinked.

Slowly, he stepped out from behind the wall.

“Well,” Lloyd said awkwardly, “I wasn’t really hiding.”

Tommy raised an eyebrow.

“You were.”

Lloyd cleared his throat.

“Okay, fine. I was hiding.”

Tommy took another sip of milk.

“Why?”

Lloyd crossed his arms and looked at him very seriously.

“Because I know the truth.”

Tommy sighed a little.

“What truth?”

Lloyd pointed at him dramatically.

“Admit it.”

Tommy blinked.

“Admit what?”

“You are an alien.”

The kitchen fell silent.

Tommy stared at Lloyd.

Then he sighed again.
