The five of them stood outside the classroom in a messy line that looked less like a team of spies and more like a group of students trying to decide whether to run away from their problems or walk straight into them. Maya had her arms crossed tightly, her expression unusually serious. She was clearly still bothered—not by the mystery, not by the strange clues, but by the fact that she had detention. Detention. She had never gotten detention before, and the idea of it seemed to bother her more than the possibility of a hamburger-related conspiracy.
“This is unbelievable,” she muttered under her breath. “I follow rules. I organize things. I make plans. And now I have detention because of all of you.”
Leo, who did not feel responsible at all, nodded like he understood. “Yes, very tragic,” he said, then immediately brightened. “Anyway, it’s my turn to lead.”
“It’s not fair!” Owen suddenly protested, stepping forward like this was a courtroom and he had been waiting his whole life for this moment. “I didn’t get a turn!”
Leo opened his mouth to argue, then paused. He sighed dramatically, as if making a huge sacrifice. “Fine,” he said. “You lead.”
Owen blinked, clearly not expecting to win that easily. He straightened, suddenly serious, and held the paper like it contained the secrets of the universe. “If you look closely,” he said, lowering his voice, “you can see something very important.”
Everyone leaned in.
“…Room 22 is written in the corner.”
There was a long silence.
Everyone stared at him.
Owen frowned. “No, seriously,” he said, turning the paper slightly and pointing at a tiny scribble in the corner.
Maya leaned closer, narrowing her eyes. And then—there it was. Faint, small, but definitely there.
ROOM 22.
“…Oh,” Maya said.
Leo grabbed the paper. “That’s new.”
Ollie tilted his head. “How did we miss that?”
Zara shrugged. “We were busy thinking about hamburgers.”
Maya straightened and crossed her arms again. “Okay,” she said, “but explain one thing. Why does it say ‘Happy Hamburger’ on the board in Room 11?”
Owen paused.
“…I have no idea,” he admitted.
Maya stared at him.
“But!” Owen added quickly, trying to recover his leadership moment, “we should go to Room 22 and investigate.”
There was a pause.
Then Owen’s expression changed.
“…There’s just one problem.”
Leo sighed. “What now?”
Owen pointed down the hallway. “Room 22 is a storage room.”
“And?” Leo asked.
Owen lowered his voice. “…It’s creepy.”
Leo rolled his eyes so hard it was impressive. “It’s a room,” he said. “With boxes.”
“With darkness,” Owen corrected.
“With light switches,” Leo replied.
“With ghosts,” Owen insisted.
“There are no ghosts in school,” Maya said.
“You don’t know that,” Owen whispered.
But despite Owen’s very detailed fears, they went anyway.
The door to Room 22 creaked slightly as Leo pushed it open, which Owen immediately decided was a bad sign. The room was dark, filled with tall stacks of boxes, old desks, and random things that looked like they had been forgotten for years. The air smelled dusty, like no one had properly cleaned it in a very long time.
Owen stepped inside cautiously. “We should stay close together,” he whispered. “This is exactly the kind of place where ghosts and zombies hide.”
Leo reached to the side and flipped the light switch.
The room lit up instantly.
Owen blinked. “…Okay, but they could still be here.”
“They are not here,” Maya said.
“They could be invisible,” Owen added.
Maya didn’t respond.
Instead, she walked over to a stack of boxes and started opening them one by one, focused and calm like she was actually doing a proper investigation. Ollie wandered around, poking random objects, while Zara leaned against a shelf like she might fall asleep again at any moment.
“We should search everything,” Owen said, trying to sound brave now that the lights were on.
Maya opened another box and paused. Sitting on top of a pile of old papers was a small note. She picked it up and read it.
“SCREAMING MANGOOOO.”
She stared at it.
Then, without hesitation, she crumpled it into a ball and tossed it out the window.
“I’m not even going to ask,” Ollie said.
“I refuse to think about that,” Maya replied.
At that exact moment, Leo, still slightly annoyed about not being the leader, stepped backward—and tripped.
He disappeared straight into one of the open boxes.
There was a loud crash.
A pause.
Then Ollie burst out laughing. “That was amazing.”
“I’m fine,” Leo’s voice came from inside the box.
Zara, who had been looking around lazily, suddenly noticed something. Against the far wall, there was a small blackboard, partly covered by stacked boxes. She pushed one aside just enough to read what was written on it.
“HS,” it said.
Underneath, in messy writing:
“So they follow me everywhere.”
Zara blinked slowly. “That’s weird,” she said.
She turned to show Leo—
—and accidentally walked straight into him just as he climbed out of the box.
“Ow!” Leo said.
“Sorry,” Zara replied, not sounding very sorry.
“What is it?” Leo asked.
Zara pointed at the board. Leo stepped closer, reading it carefully, his expression shifting slightly.
“…That could be useful,” he said.
Before anyone could question that, he pulled out his phone and quickly took a picture. “Just in case,” he added, nodding to himself like a very serious investigator.
Meanwhile, Owen had reached his limit.
“I don’t like this room,” he announced. “It’s too quiet. And dusty. And mysterious. And possibly haunted.”
“It’s not haunted,” Maya said.
“I’m leaving,” Owen declared.
And without waiting for anyone, he turned and ran out of the room.
There was a short pause.
Then the others followed him, partly because they were done searching and partly because no one wanted to be alone in there—even Maya.
Back in the hallway, Leo pulled out his phone again. “Okay,” he said, “look at this.”
But before he could show them the picture—
The bell rang.
All five of them froze.
Maya looked at the time. “If we’re late again,” she said slowly, “Mr. Frostbite will actually make our lives miserable.”
Owen nodded quickly. “He already has.”
Leo hesitated, then slipped his phone back into his pocket. “Fine,” he said. “We’ll look at it later.”
