Dad started the car with a deep sigh of victory.
Max slumped against the seat, staring at the ceiling.
“We survived,” he said weakly. “I can still feel my legs.”
Dad pulled out of the parking lot. “Groceries: purchased. Son: recovered. Mission—”
He stopped mid-sentence.
“Oh no.”
Max groaned without even turning his head. “You remembered something.”
“The teddy bear,” Dad said quietly. “Your mom told me to buy Lilly a teddy bear.”
Max sat bolt upright. “No.”
Dad turned the steering wheel.
“NO!” Max shouted. “We already escaped! You don’t turn back after escaping!”
“It’s just a quick stop,” Dad said cheerfully. “Another store. In and out.”
Max dropped his head into his hands. “This is how horror movies start.”
Meanwhile… Back at the Grocery Store
The automatic doors slid open again.
This time, it wasn’t Dad and Max.
It was the rest of the Johnson family.
Chaos entered confidently.
Noah and Ethan immediately sprinted away from the group.
“COMICS!” they yelled in unison.
They turned a corner at full speed and slammed straight into a random man carrying a mountain of teddy bears.
Teddy bears flew.
They bounced across the floor like fluffy missiles.
The man stared at them. Noah stared back.
“…Sorry?” Noah offered.
The man sighed. “This is my job.”
In another aisle, Jamie proudly grabbed control of a shopping cart.
“I can handle this,” she announced.
She pushed forward confidently.
Too confidently.
The cart swerved.
CRASH.
Jamie slammed straight into a shelf of books. Paperbacks toppled. Hardcovers thudded.
Jamie stood there, blinking.
“I meant to test its durability.”
Nearby, Uncle Jake had vanished.
No one knew when.
No one knew how.
One moment, he was there.
The next—gone.
Somewhere deep in the store, Uncle Jake wandered calmly, inspecting lamps like he lived there.
Meanwhile, Uncle Sam stood in the electronics section, nodding thoughtfully.
“I’ll just look,” he said.
Ten minutes later, he walked away carrying six phones.
An employee blinked. “Sir… do you need all of those?”
Uncle Sam shrugged. “Backup.”
In the kitchenware aisle, Mom reached for a frying pan.
She swung it to test the weight.
An employee ducked just in time.
“Good reflexes,” Mom said approvingly.
The employee slowly backed away.
Nearby, Lilly, Sophie, and Mia were having a very serious argument in the shoe section.
“These are cute,” Mia said.
“They’re ugly,” Sophie replied.
“I want sparkly ones!” Lilly yelled.
A shoe went flying.
Then another.
A nearby customer shielded their child.
