Leo and Maya ran down the hallway at full speed, dodging perfectly straight lines of students who still moved like calm, polite robots. Leo nearly crashed into a locker but recovered at the last second, while Maya kept her focus sharp, scanning ahead like she was tracking a target. When they finally reached the others, they stopped abruptly.
The sight was… disturbing.
Ollie was calmly solving math problems. Zara was reading a thick book with actual attention. Owen was writing notes neatly, without panicking, without overthinking, without even whispering something dramatic. Leo stopped in his tracks and stared. “No,” he said quietly, like he had just discovered something deeply wrong with the universe.
He stepped forward and raised his voice. “Guys! Snap out of it! We need to stop Miss Lampshade!”
None of them reacted.
Ollie flipped a page.
Zara underlined a sentence.
Owen kept writing.
Maya crossed her arms. “Yes. Definitely hypnotized.”
Leo pointed at Ollie like this was the final test. “Ollie. Do something stupid.”
Ollie didn’t even look up. “No,” he said.
Leo took a slow step back. “That confirms it. He’s gone.”
Maya stepped forward, her expression sharpening. “Leo, think,” she said quickly. “What if ‘Hamburger’ is the word she’s using to hypnotize them?”
Leo blinked, trying to keep up. “Okay…”
“Then logically,” Maya continued, “the only way to break it is to say the opposite.”
Leo frowned. “The opposite of a hamburger?”
Maya hesitated, just for a moment. “Spinach.”
There was a brief pause.
Leo looked at her. “That feels like you just made that up.”
“Just say it,” Maya replied.
Leo turned toward the others. “Spinach.”
Nothing happened.
Maya sighed. “Say it properly.”
Leo straightened slightly, took a breath, and said more clearly, “Spinach.”
Still nothing.
Maya gave him a look. “With effort.”
Leo rolled his shoulders like he was preparing for something important. “SPINACH!”
Ollie’s pencil paused mid-air.
Leo leaned forward slightly. “Wait.”
He said it again, this time faster. “Spinach. Spinach. Spinach. Spinach. Spinach.”
Ollie blinked.
Zara lowered her book just a little.
Owen stopped writing.
Leo’s eyes widened. “It’s working.”
He didn’t stop. “Spinach! Spinach! Spinach! Spinach! Spinach!”
Within seconds, the three of them looked up fully, confusion replacing that strange, calm focus.
“…Why was I doing homework?” Owen asked, frowning.
“I was doing math,” Ollie said, looking offended at himself.
Zara yawned immediately. “That was exhausting,” she muttered, leaning back.
Maya nodded once. “Good. Now we fix the rest.”
They didn’t waste time. Within minutes, they stood in front of the school’s speaker system, slightly out of breath but determined. Leo grabbed the microphone, holding it with the kind of confidence he always had right before forgetting something important.
“This is it,” he said.
There was a pause.
Leo blinked. “…I forgot.”
Maya closed her eyes. “Of course you did.”
Owen stepped forward urgently. “Try broccoli!”
Leo nodded, immediately convinced. “BROCCOLI!” he shouted into the mic.
Nothing happened.
“Okay, that didn’t work,” Maya said quickly. “Try something else. Angry Teacup.”
Leo didn’t question it. “ANGRY TEACUP!”
Still nothing.
Ollie stepped forward, thoughtful. “What about Moody Sock Puppet?”
Everyone turned to look at him.
“No,” Maya said.
Zara, who looked like she was already halfway to falling asleep again, lifted her head slightly. “It’s Spinach,” she said.
Leo’s face lit up. “Right!”
He grabbed the microphone again and took a deep breath.
“SPINACH!”
A few students in the hallway slowed down.
Leo leaned closer. “SPINACH!”
More students paused.
Now he didn’t stop. “SPINACH! SPINACH! SPINACH! SPINACH! SPINACH! SPINACH! SPINACH!”
The word echoed through the building, bouncing off walls and filling classrooms. Students began to blink, look around, and slowly break out of their strange, perfect rhythm. Conversations started again. Someone dropped a book. Someone else asked loudly why they had been doing extra work voluntarily.
Behind Leo, Zara quietly fell asleep.
Owen pointed. “She’s out again.”
“Let her be,” Maya said. “We’re winning.”
Leo kept going until the entire school seemed to shift back to normal.
Finally, he lowered the mic, breathing heavily. “…That worked.”
They rushed back into the hallway, where everything felt alive again. Students talked, laughed, and complained like they were supposed to. The strange silence was gone.
And in the middle of it all stood Miss Lampshade.
She looked around, clearly confused. “…What is going on?” she asked.
The spies approached her quickly.
“You were hypnotizing the entire school,” Leo said.
Miss Lampshade blinked. “What?”
“There were codes,” Maya added. “Messages. Patterns.”
“And hamburgers,” Owen said.
Miss Lampshade looked even more confused. “I wasn’t hypnotizing the whole school,” she said. “I was just trying to help one student focus. He refuses to study.”
The group paused.
“…One?” Maya asked.
Miss Lampshade nodded. “It was an experiment. I didn’t expect it to… spread.”
Leo frowned. “It spread to 403 students.”
Miss Lampshade winced slightly. “Yes. That seems… higher than expected.”
There was a short silence.
“…So no giant hamburger?” Owen asked carefully.
“No hamburger,” Miss Lampshade said.
Owen relaxed immediately. “Good.”
Later, the five of them collapsed onto a cafeteria bench, completely drained, their energy finally catching up with them all at once. Leo leaned back with a long, satisfied sigh, stretching his legs out like someone who had just completed a very important mission—which, for once, he actually had. “We saved the school,” he said, unable to hide the pride in his voice.
Maya nodded, though her tone stayed more balanced. “Technically, yes,” she replied. “Even if your plan started with yelling random vegetables into a microphone.”
“It worked,” Leo pointed out quickly.
Ollie stretched his arms above his head, grinning. “That was actually fun,” he said. “Also, I think we should all agree on something important.”
Maya raised an eyebrow. “What?”
Ollie pointed at Leo. “He figured out the hypnosis thing first.”
Owen nodded eagerly. “And he saved everyone with Spinach.”
Zara, who was already halfway asleep, mumbled, “He can be leader… as long as I don’t have to do anything.”
Maya hesitated for a moment, then gave a small nod. “Fine,” she said. “Leo can be the leader.”
Leo jumped up, “WOOHOO! YES! I mean—‘’ Leo cleared his throat. “I accept this responsibility,” he said, attempting to sound serious.
Ollie leaned over. “You were going to accept it anyway.”
“Obviously,” Leo replied.
Zara fell asleep instantly.
Owen smiled, looking relieved. “I’m just glad hamburgers are safe again.”
For a moment, everything felt calm.
Then, somewhere in the background, a quiet voice whispered:
“…hamburger.”
The spies froze.
Leo slowly sat up.
Maya turned her head.
Owen’s smile disappeared.
Ollie stopped mid-stretch.
Zara snored.
No one spoke.
Because suddenly—
They weren’t entirely sure it was over.
The End.
🌀 What Just Happened?
- Leo and Maya discovered their teammates had been hypnotized and snapped them out of it with the code word “Spinach.”
- The spies used the school speakers to free the rest of the hypnotized students.
- Miss Lampshade admitted her experiment was meant for one student but accidentally spread across the school.
- The team officially chose Leo as the leader after he helped save everyone.
- Just when everything seemed over, a mysterious whisper of “hamburger” hinted the adventure might not be finished.
