The five of them crouched behind a wall in the hallway, pressed together in what Leo insisted was a “perfect surveillance position” but what actually looked like five kids trying very badly not to be noticed. Unfortunately, they were failing. A group of younger students walked past, slowed down, and stared at them like they were part of a very confusing art display.
“Don’t move,” Leo whispered dramatically. “We’re invisible.”
“We are absolutely not invisible,” Maya muttered, trying to fix her hair without making it obvious she was fixing her hair.
Down the hallway, Miss Lampshade stood talking to Mr. Frostbite. She held a notebook in one hand and nodded as Mr. Frostbite said something serious, probably about homework or discipline or something equally terrible. From their hiding spot, the group watched in complete silence—except for Owen, who kept making quiet, nervous breathing noises.
Leo leaned closer to the group. “Alright,” he whispered. “As the leader, I say we follow her and uncover her secret.”
“You are NOT the leader,” everyone whispered at the exact same time.
Leo looked offended. “I created this group,” he insisted. “This whole spy thing was my idea.”
“And it was a bad idea,” Maya replied calmly.
“Correction,” Ollie added, “it was a funny idea.”
Maya ignored him. “We’re wasting time arguing,” she said. “Let’s just take turns being the leader. Whoever’s plan works becomes the official leader.”
There was a brief pause.
Then everyone nodded.
“Agreed,” Ollie said.
“Agreed,” Owen added quickly.
Zara gave a lazy thumbs-up.
Leo crossed his arms. “…I do not agree.”
“Too bad,” Maya said. “Ollie, you go first.”
Ollie’s face lit up instantly. He stood up straighter, already looking proud of himself. “Perfect,” he said. “Step one—we disguise ourselves as plants.”
There was a long silence.
Everyone stared at him.
Maya blinked. “No.”
Ollie frowned. “What do you mean ‘no’?”
“I mean,” Maya said slowly, “there is absolutely no way I am ruining my makeup to pretend to be a plant.”
“It’s for the mission,” Ollie argued.
“It’s for nonsense,” Maya corrected.
“I’m the temporary leader,” Ollie said firmly. “So it’s my choice.”
“No one is becoming a plant,” Zara said without even opening her eyes.
Owen shook his head nervously. “What if someone waters us?”
Ollie looked around at all of them, clearly disappointed. “Fine,” he sighed. “I’ll do it myself.”
Before anyone could stop him—or even ask what he meant—Ollie disappeared down the hallway.
A few seconds later, Miss Lampshade finished her conversation and walked toward the teachers’ lounge. She pushed the door open and stepped inside.
The group leaned forward slightly.
“This is going to go badly,” Maya said quietly.
Inside the lounge, Ollie had somehow already transformed.
He wasn’t a plant.
He was… a teacher.
Or at least, what Ollie believed a teacher looked like.
He wore an oversized suit jacket that clearly didn’t belong to him, a crooked tie, and a very obvious fake mustache that looked like it might fall off at any moment. He walked in with what he probably thought was confidence but actually looked like a penguin trying to act normal.
The teachers’ lounge was empty—except for Miss Lampshade.
She didn’t seem to notice Ollie at first. Instead, she sat down at a table, opened her notebook, and began writing something with a bright green pen.
Ollie froze near the door.
Suspicious, he thought immediately.
Very suspicious.
He leaned slightly to get a better look, squinting like he could decode the writing from across the room. But before he could gather any useful information—or any information at all—he panicked.
And ran.
He rushed out of the lounge at full speed—
—and crashed directly into Mr. Frostbite.
The hallway went silent.
Mr. Frostbite looked down at him slowly. “And who,” he said in a very calm, very dangerous voice, “are you supposed to be?”
Ollie straightened instantly, trying to look professional. “I am a teacher,” he said confidently.
Mr. Frostbite stared at him.
“…A teacher,” he repeated.
“Yes,” Ollie said, nodding quickly.
“With a fake mustache,” Mr. Frostbite added.
Ollie didn’t respond.
“With a jacket three sizes too big,” Mr. Frostbite continued.
Ollie still didn’t respond.
“And,” Mr. Frostbite finished, “sneaking out of the teachers’ lounge.”
Ollie sighed.
“I can explain—”
“Detention,” Mr. Frostbite said immediately.
Ollie closed his eyes.
“Why?” he muttered.
“A terrible disguise,” Mr. Frostbite added. “And poor decision-making.”
A few minutes later, Ollie returned to the group, dragging his feet dramatically.
“Well?” Leo asked eagerly. “What did you find?”
Ollie crossed his arms. “She was writing something,” he said.
Maya blinked. “In a notebook?”
“Yes.”
“With a pen?”
“…Yes.”
Maya stared at him. “Ollie, she’s a teacher. She was probably writing her next lecture.”
Owen’s eyes widened again. “Or,” he said, lowering his voice, “she was planning the hamburger attack.”
Everyone groaned at the same time.
“There is no hamburger attack!” Maya said.
“You don’t know that,” Owen insisted.
Zara yawned. “If a hamburger shows up,” she said lazily, “I’m not running.”
Leo, however, looked more determined than ever. “This just proves it,” he said. “She’s hiding something.”
Maya sighed. “Or she’s doing her job.”
Leo shook his head. “No,” he said firmly. “This is bigger than that.”
Ollie pointed at him. “Also, I should still be leader. My plan worked.”
“You got detention,” Maya said.
“Details,” Ollie replied.
Leo crossed his arms again. “Next plan is mine,” he declared.
Maya raised an eyebrow. “We’ll see.”
Down the hallway, the teachers’ lounge door opened again.
Miss Lampshade stepped out, holding her notebook.
The group immediately ducked back behind the wall, trying once again to look invisible.
They failed.
But this time…
They were definitely not giving up.
Because whatever was going on—
They were going to figure it out.
Even if it made absolutely no sense.
