By the time the argument reached its fifth completely unnecessary round, it had become less about leadership and more about who could sound the most confident while being absolutely wrong. Leo stood with his arms crossed, chin slightly raised, as if he had just been elected leader of something important. Maya, on the other hand, looked like she had already written a full report explaining why Leo should not be in charge of anything ever. Ollie kept tugging at his oversized jacket like it added authority, Owen looked like leadership itself might be dangerous, and Zara leaned against the wall, blinking slowly like she had accidentally attended the wrong meeting.
“I’m just saying,” Leo insisted, “a leader needs confidence.”
“And thinking,” Maya replied. “Mostly thinking.”
“I think!”
“Not enough,” Maya said calmly.
While they were busy arguing, Miss Lampshade walked right past them.
None of them noticed.
It took exactly three seconds for the silence to feel suspicious enough that Maya stopped talking mid-sentence. The group slowly turned their heads, like a very poorly coordinated surveillance team, just in time to see Miss Lampshade walking away down the hallway.
All five of them froze.
Then, very suddenly, they all tried to act normal at the same time—which made everything worse.
Owen began whistling. Not a tune. Not even a rhythm. Just a weak, confused noise that sounded like a kettle trying to boil but giving up halfway. Ollie attempted to lean casually against the wall but tripped over his own sleeve and crashed straight into Leo, who stumbled forward like a surprised giraffe. Zara, somehow, fell asleep while still standing, her head tilting forward in a slow, dramatic nod. Maya grabbed a book and held it up, pretending to read, except it was upside down and she hadn’t realized.
Miss Lampshade did not react.
She walked past them like this was a perfectly normal hallway moment.
But as she turned the corner, something slipped from her notebook and drifted gently to the floor behind her.
The moment she disappeared—
All five of them launched forward at the same time.
“Mine!” Leo shouted.
“I saw it first!” Ollie argued.
“Careful!” Maya warned.
In the middle of the chaos, Owen somehow lost a shoe, which flew through the air and hit a completely innocent student passing by.
“OW!” the student yelled.
“Sorry!” Owen shouted, chasing after his own shoe like it had betrayed him.
Meanwhile, Maya stepped forward with surprising precision, grabbed the paper, and backed away like a professional who regretted her team.
“Got it,” she said.
Everyone crowded around her instantly, breathing way too loudly for a group that was supposed to be stealthy. She unfolded the paper carefully, smoothing out the wrinkles as all four of them leaned in so close they were basically reading it together.
FRIDAY
510
ROOM: 11
HAMBURGER
There was silence.
Then Owen gasped like he had just solved the mystery. “She’s a hamburger.”
Maya blinked slowly. “She is not a hamburger.”
“A hamburger disguised as a teacher,” Owen corrected, clearly improving his theory.
Leo pointed at the paper. “Alright, my turn to lead.”
“No,” Maya said immediately, pulling the paper slightly away from him. “This is a code. So I should be the one to solve it.”
She tapped the number. “It says 510. So it could mean it is time.”
Ollie nodded seriously. “Yes. That sounds like something numbers would do.”
Maya continued, ignoring him. “Friday. 5:10. Room 11. And… hamburger.”
Owen stepped back. “She’s going to summon it.”
“No one is summoning anything,” Maya said, though her voice had a tiny crack in it.
Zara spoke without opening her eyes. “What if it’s 5:10 in the morning,” she said slowly, “so when she summons a giant hamburger… no one sees it.”
Maya paused.
“…That is actually a terrifyingly good point,” she admitted.
Owen looked like he might cry.
“But we’re going with 5:10 in the evening,” Maya added quickly. “Because that’s normal. And we like normal.”
Leo grinned. “So we spy on her.”
Maya nodded. “Yes. We spy.”
At exactly 5:10 pm, the hallway outside Room 11 was quiet enough to feel suspicious. The kind of quiet where every tiny sound felt louder than it should, including Owen’s nervous breathing and Ollie’s jacket making strange swishing noises every time he moved.
“This is it,” Leo whispered.
“If I disappear,” Owen whispered back, “tell my family I tried.”
“You didn’t try anything,” Maya said.
Leo slowly pushed the door open.
The room was empty.
But on the board—
Something was written.
Big.
Messy.
And extremely dramatic.
HAAPPPY HAMBURGERRRR!!!!!!
The group gasped all at once.
Owen grabbed Leo’s arm. “IT’S HERE.”
“It’s words,” Maya said.
“Suspicious words,” Leo corrected.
Just then, the door opened.
The spies scrambled behind the teacher’s desk, bumping into each other and definitely not looking like professionals.
A group of fifth-grade students walked in, chatting casually, completely unaware that five disasters were hiding behind the desk. Owen froze instantly. “They’re here,” he whispered. “They’re here to hunt us.”
“They’re here for class,” Maya said, peeking over the desk.
“Oh,” Owen said.
He relaxed slightly.
Then—
The door opened again.
Slow footsteps.
Very familiar footsteps.
Mr. Frostbite walked in.
Time stopped.
He looked around the room once. Then his gaze slowly lowered toward the teacher’s desk, where five heads were doing a very poor job of not existing.
“…Of course,” he said.
The spies slowly stood up.
Owen gave a weak smile. “…Surprise?”
Mr. Frostbite folded his arms. “First, the principal’s office,” he said, glancing at Leo. “Then the teacher’s lounge.” His eyes moved to Ollie. “And now this.”
No one spoke.
“Detention.”
The word hit all five of them at once.
Owen slowly raised his hand. “Is it 27 hours?”
Mr. Frostbite stared at him. “…No.”
Owen sighed in relief.
“Longer,” Mr. Frostbite added.
Owen made a sound that was not quite a scream but very close.
As they walked out of the classroom, defeated but still confused, Leo leaned toward the group. “This isn’t over,” he whispered.
Maya sighed. “It should be.”
