Emily’s whole body was trembling as she pointed toward a dusty window at the end of the hallway. “Th-th-there! Look!” she stammered.
Kate and Hannah followed her finger, pressing close to the glass.
Their jaws dropped.
Inside the dark room beyond the window, five figures drifted in the gloom. Their shapes were twisted and unnatural, shrouded in torn robes and curling mist. An icy chill slipped through the cracks in the window frame, crawling across the girls’ skin like invisible fingers.
Kate’s breath caught. “Oh… my… gosh.”
Emily whimpered, clutching her arms. “They’re real. They’re REAL!”
The figures shifted, their glowing eyes burning through the shadows. Their faces were warped, impossible to read, but full of rage. For a moment, the girls swore the air itself was humming, vibrating with something wrong.
Hannah whispered, her voice shaking just a little, “We’re either looking at the afterlife… or a really bad Halloween party.”
The three stood frozen, until Kate squinted. “Wait… are they…?”
The ghosts suddenly burst into shrill, echoing laughter. Their voices rattled like haunted whispers through the walls. And then it became clear.
They weren’t plotting. They weren’t haunting.
They were sitting around a board game.
One ghost slammed down a card, the mist around him flaring. Another groaned dramatically, waving its tattered arms. The smallest spirit seemed to sulk, crossing invisible arms while the others cackled.
Kate blinked. “Are they… playing Monopoly?”
Hannah slapped her forehead. “Seriously?! Vengeful spirits and they’re arguing over fake money?”
Emily’s lips quivered. “I—I don’t care what they’re playing. We need to leave. NOW.”
She spun on her heel and bolted toward the elevator, nearly tripping over her own feet. Kate and Hannah scrambled after her.
The three of them pressed the elevator button repeatedly, as if hammering it faster would make it appear sooner.
“Come on, come on, come on!” Emily cried, glancing over her shoulder. “What if they finish the game and come looking for more players?!”
Finally, the elevator dinged and the doors creaked open. Without hesitation, the girls threw themselves inside, practically tackling one another in their rush.
Kate jabbed the button for the ground floor over and over. “Down, down, down! Before Monopoly Ghost decides to buy the building!”
The doors slid shut, and the 14th floor vanished from sight.
