Emily tugged nervously on the blanket. “Kate… that story you told… it wasn’t real, right?”
Kate burst out laughing. “Of course not! I made it up. Do you seriously think a ghost pays the electric bill for the 14th floor?”
Emily let out a sigh of relief. “Good. Because for a second I thought—”
But before she could finish, Hannah leaned in with a mischievous grin. “Actually… what if it is real? What if the 14th floor is haunted, and you just described it by accident?”
Emily froze. “Don’t even joke about that!”
“I’m not joking,” Hannah said, eyes wide with mock seriousness. “Think about it. Nobody lives there. The elevator stops there by itself. It all makes sense. We should check it out.”
Kate shrugged casually. “Fine by me. It’s fake anyway. If you want to see a boring empty floor, let’s go.”
Emily’s jaw dropped. “WHAT? No! No way! I am not stepping foot on that floor.”
Hannah smirked, flapping her arms. “Bawk bawk bawk!”
Emily’s face turned red. “I am NOT a chicken.”
“Prove it then,” Hannah challenged.
Emily groaned, covering her face with her hands. “I hate you both. Fine. But if I die, I’m haunting you first.”
Minutes later, while their moms were deep in conversation in the kitchen, the three girls tiptoed toward the door. Every squeak of the floorboards made Emily whisper, “Abort mission!” but the other two dragged her along.
When they reached the elevator, Kate pressed the button with dramatic flair. “To the 14th floor we go.”
“Wait,” Emily hissed. “Where’s Hannah?”
Kate looked around, only to see a giant pillowcase squirming on the floor.
“…Hannah?” Kate asked slowly.
The pillowcase wobbled, then Hannah’s muffled voice came out. “I thought we were sneaking out ninja style. Camouflage!”
Kate facepalmed. “You’re literally a moving pillow. That’s the opposite of sneaky.”
Emily groaned. “Why am I friends with you people?”
Kate yanked the pillowcase off, revealing a grinning Hannah with her hair sticking up like she’d just battled a thunderstorm.
“Ta-da!” Hannah said proudly.
Emily muttered, “This is how horror movies start.”
The elevator dinged open. All three exchanged a nervous glance.
And then, slowly, they stepped inside.
