The elevator doors slid open with a low groan.
The three girls stepped out, their sneakers crunching on layers of dust. The air smelled stale, like no one had been there in years. Broken ceiling panels dangled above, and the long hallway stretched endlessly into shadows.
Emily clutched Kate’s sleeve. “I don’t like this. I don’t like this at all. Why is it so quiet?”
“Because the ghosts are on vacation,” Hannah said with a grin. “Relax.”
She skipped ahead and shoved open a window. Dust flew into her face as she leaned out to peer below. Suddenly, Hannah leapt back, letting out a bloodcurdling scream.
“AHHHHH!”
“AHHHHHH!” Emily screamed too, clutching her chest.
Kate’s eyes widened, and she shrieked just as loudly, “AHHHHHHHHH!”
The three of them stood there, screaming in chorus, until Hannah dropped to the floor, laughing so hard she could barely breathe.
“You should’ve seen your faces!” she wheezed. “Priceless!”
Kate crossed her arms. “Hannah, you are so dead.”
Emily pouted. “My soul just left my body for a second!”
Without warning, Kate and Emily pounced on Hannah, ruffling her hair until it stood up like a bird’s nest.
“Hey! Stop! This is bullying!” Hannah protested, laughing through the chaos.
When the giggles finally died down, Kate glanced around. Her smile faded. Something about the 14th floor felt… wrong.
It was the middle of the day, sunlight was shining brightly outside, but here, the hallway seemed dim, like the shadows refused to leave.
She shivered. “Weird…” she muttered under her breath.
Before she could think about it more, a deafening scream pierced the silence.
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
It was Emily. But this time, it wasn’t her usual overreacting squeal. It was louder. Too loud. The kind of scream that made Kate and Hannah’s blood run cold.
Kate spun around. “Emily?! What is it?”
Emily’s face was pale, her finger trembling as she pointed into the shadows at the end of the hallway.
Something was there.
Something moving.
