The elevator doors opened with a soft ding.
The man stepped inside, humming a cheerful tune.

Kate, Emily, and Hannah glanced at each other. None of them spoke, but the look they shared said everything: We have to follow him.

They slipped into the next elevator just before the doors closed. The ride up felt endless. The numbers blinked—11… 12… 13…

The elevator chimed again.
14.

When the doors slid open, the hallway was still.
Dust swirled in the faint light.

And then, something floated out.

hat.
A dusty, black top hat.

It drifted gently through the air and landed right at their feet.

The girls froze.
No sign of the man.
No footsteps.
Just the hat.

Emily’s trembling whisper broke the silence. “He’s gone.”

That was all it took.

They screamed, bolted down the stairs, and didn’t stop until they were safe in Kate’s room, panting and wide-eyed.

“This is too creepy,” Hannah gasped, clutching a pillow. “We never talk about this again. Ever.”

“Agreed,” Kate said.
“Double agreed,” Emily whispered.

But no matter how hard they tried, the image of those ghosts—and that grinning man in the top hat—haunted their minds for days.

One Week Later

Kate woke up to strange noises.
The sound of machines humming.
Metal clanging.
Hammers tapping.

She stumbled into the living room. “Mom, what’s going on? What’s all that noise?”

Her mom smiled. “Oh, the building’s finally doing maintenance. Some renovation work on the floors above us.”

Kate frowned. “Which floor?”

“The 14th floor,” her mom said casually.

Kate froze.
“The… what floor?”

But her mom had already gone back to her morning tea.

Kate’s heart pounded. She grabbed her phone and raced out the door.

Within minutes, she, Emily, and Hannah were standing together again, staring at the open elevator doors.

“Ready?” Kate asked.

“No,” Emily said immediately.
“Too bad,” Hannah muttered, stepping in first.

The elevator hummed, and the doors opened to reveal a bright hallway.

Workers filled the space, men with helmets, drills, and buckets of paint. The 14th floor was alive with noise and chatter.

The girls exchanged relieved smiles.

“See?” Kate said, laughing nervously. “Not haunted. Just renovation.”

“Thank goodness,” Emily sighed. “I can finally sleep again.”

But then one of the workers, an older man covered in dust, looked up from his tools. He’d clearly heard them talking.

He smiled, a slow, unsettling smile.

“Oh, it’s haunted, all right,” he said. “We’re just rebuilding it.”

Kate blinked. “You’re… what?”

The man’s grin widened, and for a split second, his eyes shimmered pale white.

“The ghosts,” he said softly. “We’re the ones rebuilding the 14th floor.”

The hammer in his hand vanished into thin air.

And as the girls backed toward the elevator, every worker slowly turned to look at them, silent, smiling, and slightly transparent.

The doors closed before anyone could scream.
